Halal Chinese Food at Yik Mun Restaurant

Posted on June 07, 2011

If there is anything Perak is famous for, it’s food. And if it’s Chinese food that you’re looking for, have we got a good recommendation for you. Yik Mun coffee shop (or kopitiam as Malaysians call it) is located at a corner lot on Jalan Slim River, Tanjung Malim. The restaurant is easy to discover but if you get lost, you can always ask for directions like I did as it is a very small town and the friendly local people are happy to help. Alternatively, scroll down below for directions and the restaurant address. And yes, the food served here is halal.

I paid a visit to their little shop with a friend of mine and we had a blast working our way through some of their dishes.

Curry Mee
  • This is their curry mee. They are generous with the side dish and it’s very tasty. You may choose either mee , meehoon or kuey teow and the dish includes fried bean curd, fish ball, vegetables, chicken and a thick gravy. In other words, the flavour is very rich! And don’t worry, it is not too spicy.
Lamb Chop with homemade white bread
  • Lamb Chop with homemade steamed bread – they seem to run out of white bread on most days – with mashed potatoes, sour sauce, beans, mushroom, and fresh tomatoes topped with thousand island sauce was the next item we tried. The portion was reasonable, and the gravy (tomato Lea and Perrins) is simply divine!
Chinese fried rice
  • We also tried the Chinese fried rice. Surprisingly, it tasted marvelous and they threw in a lot of prawns and chicken too! That’s why he doesn’t  want to share!
Chicken rice
  • Then, there’s the chicken rice. Of course, both the rice and the chicken were the actual highlights of this dish! It may not look tempting but I would highly recommended it.
Pau
  • Finally, the pau. What can I say, the Pau is soft, fresh, smells good and definitely tastes good. The fluffy and soft skin enveloping the rather scarce fillings makes the snack a delectable one. It’s perfect as tea-time accompaniment to a piping hot cup of Hainanese tea or coffee. I wish my face is also as soft as the bun!

Since 1926, the famous Tanjung Malim Pau has been a favorite to all especially to the Muslims as it is halal. These days, you may also purchase the frozen pack too, which comes with four flavors, which are Pau Daging (Beef), Pau Ayam (Chicken), Pau Kaya and Pau Kacang (Beans). I tasted the Kacang, Chicken and Beef. Yummy!

Other specialties that we didn’t get the chance to try that day includes:

  • Kari kaipau (steamed curry chicken dumplings)
The chicken curry pau, has all the distinct tastes of the highly-popular Chinese dumpling but with a different filling. It is popular among people of all ethnic backgrounds.
  • Roti kahwin (toasted sandwich bread)
Apart from pau, YikMun also produces a famous kaya. The roti kahwin is two pieces of toasted kopitiam bread, spread with generous amounts of kaya and margarine and slapped together. The quality of the ingredients and how the bread is toasted make all the difference.
  • Hainanese Chicken Chop

Directions to Yik Mun coffee shop:
From the Tanjung Malim Toll Plaza, drive straight on until you see a flyover bridge. Take a left until you get into the old road towards Tanjung Malim. The old road is the trunk road from Sungkai towards Tanjung Malim. Another option would be to exit at the Tanjung Malim toll exit. Keep driving straight past all the traffic lights. At the third traffic light, look to your right and you’ll see the Yik Mun coffee shop.

Address and telephone number to the shop:
1 Jalan Slim Lama, 35900 Tanjung Malim (Tel: 05-459 6006)

Yik Mun now has 3 other outlets which are located at the R&R Ulu Bernam Plus Highway to KL, Hartamas Shopping Center (Sri Hartamas) and the Fast Food in Jaya Jusco 1 Utama shopping complex (Bandar Utama). Please do note that the prices at the various locations might be different. Enjoy!
